poem not written in 1987

against all logic
five kilometres from an ice-hockey stadium
if you ride sidesaddle

& sorrow freezes as it falls
inconsolable infants
climbing snow-black trees

by the river near a bridge a songbird in a
suitcase / now i’ve lost my wristwatch
i’m always in a hurry

to attract your attention we can't keep from laughing
o! there are mirrors in the sky
even though it’s past midnight
